Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Monday said that Congress was keen on maintaining its alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party, despite differences over seat-sharing arrangement for October's elections to the Maharashtra assembly. However, Chavan said that his party was willing to go solo, if the situation demanded. On the other side, senior NCP leader Tariq Anwar on Tuesday said both parties would suffer if the alliance collapsed.
West Bengal: Molestation victim's fathers urges JU students to withdraw protests
The father of the woman whose molestation sparked enormous demonstrations by students of Kolkata's Jadavpur University on Monday urged the protestors to withdraw their campaign. Instead, he joined rival demonstrations by the Trinamool Congress youth wing. "I met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee [on Monday] who assured me that the culprits would be punished", said the victim's father. "I am not demanding Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti’s resignation and appeal to the students to resume classes." However, the students continued their campaign against the university's mishandling of the complaint.
Uttar Pradesh: Trinamool Congress leaders direct party workers to refrain from 'love jihad' campaign
Senior Bharatiya Janata party leader Shiv Prakash on Monday ordered party workers not to get involved in the 'love jihad' campaign, saying "sister organisations" like the Bajrang Dal would take up the issue. The move was reportedly made in response to the party's failure in the recent assembly by-elections. During the election campaign, senior leader Yogi Adityanath attempted to woo Hindu voters by making frequent references to "love jihad", claiming that Muslim men were courting Hindu women in order to convert them.
Jammu and Kashmir: Sikh body heeds to separatist's request for more relief material
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the organisation responsible for the upkeep of Sikh places of worship, sent five trucks containing relief material on Monday to Kashmir at the request of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The trucks carried materials like blankets and dry rations.
Meghalaya: Floods kill 7, affects 1 lakh
The South West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya experienced heavy floods on Monday that inundated over 100 villages, affected over 1 lakh persons and killed seven. Three days of heavy rain caused the Ganol river to flood, destroying crops fields and livestock.
